Permanent mold casting vs High pressure die casting

2024-01-20 14:10:28

"Permanent mold casting" and "high-pressure die casting" are two different metal casting processes used to create metal parts. Here's a comparison of the two:

Process:

Permanent Mold Casting: In this process, a reusable metal mold is used to create the part. The molten metal is poured into the mold, where it solidifies to form the desired shape.

High-Pressure Die Casting: This process involves injecting molten metal into a steel mold at high pressure. The metal solidifies quickly and the part is ejected from the mold.

Mold:

Permanent Mold Casting: The mold used in this process is typically made of steel or cast iron and can be reused multiple times.

High-Pressure Die Casting: The mold used in this process is made of steel and can withstand the high pressure of the molten metal injection.

Cooling Rate:

Permanent Mold Casting: The cooling rate of the molten metal is slower compared to high-pressure die casting.

High-Pressure Die Casting: The rapid injection and cooling process results in a faster cooling rate, allowing for quick production cycles.

Surface Finish:

Permanent Mold Casting: Parts produced by permanent mold casting typically have a better surface finish and dimensional accuracy.

High-Pressure Die Casting: The rapid cooling and solidification process may result in surface defects, but these can be minimized with proper mold design and process control.

Production Volume:

Permanent Mold Casting: Suitable for medium to high production volumes.

High-Pressure Die Casting: Ideal for high-volume production due to its rapid cycle times.

Both processes have their advantages and limitations, and the choice between them depends on factors such as part complexity, production volume, material requirements, and cost considerations.
